Dressing Mother of the Bride or Groom? Don’t panic, help is here!
- Blog Post
When your child announces they’re getting married, your heart swells with pride and then, quite quickly, your brain starts spinning: ‘What on earth am I going to wear?!’
For many mothers of the bride or groom, the hunt for the perfect outfit can feel like navigating a minefield of stiff satin, dated lace boleros, and (dare we say it) “mumsy” two-piece suits that make you feel more like a guest at a garden party than the proud, glamorous parent you are.
But fear not, today’s mother of the bride or groom can be cool, elegant and effortlessly stylish without resorting to anything frumpy or overly traditional. Here’s how to dress for the big day with confidence, personality, and a touch of that wow factor!
1. Forget the rules, well, most of them.
In the past, mothers were expected to wear a demure pastel, a hat, and something that didn’t draw attention. Not anymore. Weddings today are much more personal and less rigid – and that includes what you wear. If you love bold colour, sequins, or a sleek jumpsuit, go for it. The only real “rules” are not to wear white and to complement the overall vibe of the wedding; and of course not outshine the bride – but you are allowed to shine!
2. Embrace color and texture
Colours are dictated by the seasons, but Instead of defaulting to beige, blush, pastels , or navy (although navy can still look fab!), think about jewel tones, soft metallics or modern florals and abstract patterns. Emerald green, slate blue, teal, deep raspberry, even sophisticated black are all on the table. Also, fabrics like chiffon, crepes, and silks feel luxurious without being fussy. A mixture of textures and fabrics can be stunning.
3. Modern silhouettes are your friend
Firstly consider your body shape, where do you go in and out? Don’t use this time to experiment, go for shapes that you already know fit and flatter. Do you want it more bodycon or to skim and flare? But one thing’s for sure, you don’t need a floor-length matronly gown to look formal or a stiff boxy jacket. Consider tailoring, or a midi-length hourglass shape dress, or even a chic jumpsuit with great tailoring and a dramatic sleeve. Or a tea-length dress with a contemporary print and clean lines or a column gown with a statement cape or wrap. These shapes are elegant but modern and can be brought to life with beautiful jewellery.
4. Don’t forget the details
Accessories can enhance your already fabulous outfit but don’t go overboard. A wide cuff and statement earrings can be as glam as an elaborate necklace and chunky rings. Swap the sensible court shoes for a strappy block heel. For extra comfort, without compromising style, go for a platform or for even more comfort try some sparkly flats. Add a sleek clutch, think size and colour, btw, It doesn’t have to match your shoes. Don’t let your outfit down by your choice of outer layer. A delicious velvet evening coat or cape is divine but a pashmina can also look elegant. If a hat or fascinator is necessary make it fabulous and fun, not fussy.
5. Show your personality
This is such an emotional day and your outfit should feel like you. If you’re glamorous, go for something with a bit of drama. If you’re understated and minimalist, a simple silhouette with impeccable tailoring is perfect. If you love vintage, add a little retro flair. The point is, you don’t need to fit into anyone’s idea of what a “mother of the bride” should look like, only your own.
6. Be comfortable (but polished)
You’ll be hugging, posing for photos, mingling, possibly running after grandchildren so comfort is important, too. Test your shoes beforehand, make sure you can sit and stand with ease, and choose fabrics that breathe and move with you. Looking chic and feeling relaxed is the ultimate power move.
Final thoughts……..
You’re not just a mother of the bride or groom, you’re you, and this is a day for you to feel radiant and proud. Forget the dated stereotypes, and embrace an outfit that makes you feel confident, beautiful, and ready to celebrate.
Remember: there’s nothing “mumsy” about showing up as the best version of yourself!
